Tanner Staging Calculator

The Tanner Staging Calculator is used to assess the physical development of children and adolescents during puberty. It evaluates five stages (Stages 1–5) of secondary sexual characteristics, including breast development in females, genital growth in males, and pubic hair development in both sexes. This staging helps clinicians monitor pubertal progress, diagnose abnormalities, and guide appropriate treatment.

Why Use

  • Puberty Assessment: Provides a standardized method to evaluate and document pubertal changes.
  • Identify Disorders: Detects conditions like precocious puberty, delayed puberty, or hormonal imbalances.
  • Track Growth: Monitors the progression of puberty and its alignment with age and growth velocity.
  • Guide Interventions: Helps determine the need for further investigations or therapeutic interventions.

  • The Tanner Staging system classifies the physical development of children, adolescents, and adults based on external primary and secondary sexual characteristics.

Tanner Staging consists of five stages:

Breast Development (Females)

  • Stage 1: No glandular tissue, flat chest.
  • Stage 2: Breast budding with elevation of the breast and papilla.
  • Stage 3: Further enlargement of the breast and areola without contour separation.
  • Stage 4: Projection of the areola and papilla to form a secondary mound.
  • Stage 5: Mature breast with papilla projection only.

Genital Development (Males)

  • Stage 1: Prepubertal, no change in testes size.
  • Stage 2: Testes enlarge, scrotum thins and reddens.
  • Stage 3: Further enlargement of testes and penis lengthening.
  • Stage 4: Penis increases in length and girth; testes enlarge.
  • Stage 5: Adult genitalia.

Pubic Hair (Both Sexes)

  • Stage 1: No pubic hair.
  • Stage 2: Sparse, long, slightly pigmented hair at the base of the genitalia.
  • Stage 3: Darker, coarser, curlier hair spreading sparsely.
  • Stage 4: Adult-like hair, limited to genital area.
  • Stage 5: Hair spreads to thighs and is adult in quantity and quality.
